Some 200 protesters have clashed with police outside France’s consulate in the southern Pakistani city of Karachi after a demonstration against Charlie Hebdo turned violent.
A photographer with the French news agency AFP was shot and seriously hurt – one of at least three casualties as anger flared over the new cover cartoon lampooning Islam’s Prophet Mohammad.
Demonstrations denouncing the satirical newspaper have been held across deeply conservative Pakistan where parliament has passed a motion condemning what it called the ‘blasphemous’ caricatures.
In Karachi, mostly students gathered outside the consulate
shouting slogans, and the standoff quickly turned violent with feelings running particularly high after traditional Friday prayers.
