A man from London has been charged by police with inciting after sending a tweet in which he says he asked a Muslim woman to explain the Brussels attacks.

Matthew Doyle, 46, from South Croydon, London tweeted on Tuesday: I confronted a Muslim woman yesterday in Croydon. I asked her to explain Brussels. She said “Nothing to do with me”. A mealy mouthed reply.

After an investigation by the Community Safety Unit of Croydon Police, he was arrested on Wednesday and charged on Friday. He will appear before a magistrate tomorrow.

The Met police said in a statement that Doyle had been charged “under section 19 of the Public Order Act 1986; publishing or distributing written material which is threatening, abusive or insulting, likely or intended to stir up racial hatred.”

The tweet received a flurry of sarcastic responses.
