The International Olympic Committee continued its fight against doping by disqualifying six more athletes for having failed tests at the 2008 Beijing Olympics.
Five are weightlifters while the other is 4×400m runner Tatyana Firova.
Three of the six are from Russia, who have come under severe scrutiny over the past year following revelations of a wide-spread and state sponsored doping programme.
Samples from Beijing and the London 2012 Olympics have been re-analyzed using new methods to uncover banned substances which would have gone undetected at the time.
The six athletes are:
Alexandru Dudoglo of Moldova who finished ninth in the men’s 69kg weightlifting, and has now tested positive for stanozolol.
Nadezda Evstyukhina of Russia who won bronze in the women’s 75kg weightlifting. She tested positive for turinabol and EPO.
Tigran Martirosyan of Armenia who won bronze in men’s 69kg weightlifting. He tested positive for stanozolol and turinabol.
Marina Shainova of Russia who won silver in the women’s 58kg weightlifting. She tested positive for stanozolol and turinabol.
Intigam Zairov of Azerbaijan finished ninth in the men’s 85kg weightlifting. He tested positive for turinabol.
