There has been a mixed reaction in the US to news that Joe Biden will not be seeking the Democratic nomination for the 2016 presidency.

The vice president’s announcement, which came on Wednesday, ended months of suspense and removes a huge political obstacle for front-runner Hillary Clinton.

“Unfortunately, I believe we’re out of time, the time necessary to mount a winning campaign for the nomination. But while I will not be a candidate, I will not be silent,” said Biden, 72, standing alongside President Barack Obama.

Outside the White House in Washington, some people said they were surprised about Biden’s decision, while others thought it was the right way to go.

“I don’t actually find it that surprising. I sort of figured that’s what would happen. I don’t think he ever would’ve beaten Clinton or Sanders,” said one woman.

A man added: “Well I’m amazed that Biden’s not running, I think he would’ve had a pretty good chance. This will certainly end the Trump idea of the presidency, because Hillary will now be anointed president next year.”

With Clinton facing slipping poll numbers, Biden’s supporters had been pushing him to go for the nomination. But Clinton impressed many during last week’s Democratic debate, turning the tide back in her favour.
